Edgar Martin, Jr., 66, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at Tuomey Health Care System, Sumter. Born in Lee County on September 21, 1942, he was the son of Eva Dell Isaac Martin and the late Edgar Martin, Sr.
Edgar attended the public schools of Sumter County. After attending school, he enlisted into the United States Army, where he served 13 years and was honorably discharged. While serving in the Army, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He then returned to Sumter, where he worked for Sumter Dairy and Korn Industries.
"Jr", as he was affectionately called, attended Mechanicsville United Methodist Church as a young man. To know Edgar was to love him. Edgar was an avid sportsman who loved to play baseball. He officiated as an umpire at many baseball games. He loved children and was loved by them also.
He leaves to cherish his memories: a caring and loving mother, Eva Dell Martin of the home; one sister, Eva Mae Simon of East Orange, NJ; one brother, Samuel Martin of West Oaklane, PA; three sons, Rodney G. Martin of Lawton, OK, Edwin J. Martin of Jacksonville, FLA, and Tavares Hilton of Atlanta, GA; eight grandchildren; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Martin.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P. M., Monday, May 4, 2009 from the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church, 184 Lake Ashwood Road, Sumter with Rev. Kenneth N. Carter, pastor, eulogist. The family will receive friends at the family home, 100 East Moore Street, Sumter.
The Remains will be placed in the church at 1:00 P. M.
The procession will leave from the family home at 1:25 P. M.
Floral bearers and Pall bearers will be family and friends of the family.
Burial will be in the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church Yard Cemetery.
