Robert Alston, Jr., 66, husband of Joyce Jenkins Alston, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at his residence. Born March 30, 1949, in Rembert, he was the son of the late Robert and Helen Alston. Robert attended Sumter County Public Schools and graduated from Ebenezer High School in 1967. He also received his Associates Degree in Business from Columbia Commercial College in 1979. Robert served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, with the 117th Aviation Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, as an Aviation Combat Mechanic from 1968-1970 with an honorable discharge. He joined the United States Air Force National Guard in 1982 and served with the 169th CES, out of McIntire Air Force Base in Eastover from which he retired in 2003. Robert worked as a machinist at E I DuPont, Camden for 33 years and took early retirement in 2001. He also loved to work with his hands and worked on Heating and Air units for about 25 years. Robert was raised as a Christian in the Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, where he gave his life to God in 2008 and became a member. He served on the Brotherhood Ministry as treasurer and a member of the Nightingales’ Choir. He leaves to cherish his memories: one sister, Lena (Ray) Deas of Florida; one brother James Rembert of Rembert; three children from his first union, David Alston, Sylvia Ervin and Valarie Alston; three step children he inherited from his present marriage, Phatima Laster, Christina Laster and Barkim Granger; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter; five nieces; seven nephews; a host of cousins, loving church family, dear co-workers and friends. Homegoing services will be held Saturday, February 27, 2016, 3:00 p. m., from the Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, 7355 Camden Highway, Rembert, with the Rev. Anthony L. Taylor, Sr., pastor, eulogist. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 4040 Furmanfield Road, Rembert. Wake service will be held 5:00 – 6:00 p. m., Friday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter. The Remains will be placed in the church at 2:00 p. m. The funeral procession will leave from the home at 2:20 p. m. Floral ladies will be classmates and nieces. Pall bearers will be classmates and nephews. Burial will be in the Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Churchyard Cemetery.
