Betty Singletary Lowery, 76, was summoned to enter the fuller life on Monday, March 7, 2016. Born September 30, 1939, in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Dorsey and Cherry Smith Singletary. After the death of her parents, she was reared by her grandparents, the late Warren and Martha Ann Smith. Betty was a graduate of Carver High School, Class of 1958, Lake City. During her high school years, she was a proud and enthusiastic cheerleader with the “Roosters”. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined St. John United Methodist Church, Lake City, where she served in many capacities until relocating to Paterson, NJ. There she met and married her husband of 41 years, the late Samuel L. Lowery. In later years, they moved to Brooklyn, NY and eventually to Sumter, where she became a member of her husband’s family church, Barnettsville Baptist Church. There Betty served as a member of the Gospel Choir, Usher Board, Young Women’s Auxiliary, chairperson of Family and Friends Celebration committee and other ministries. Rededicating her life to Christ, Betty joined Greater Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Pastor’s Aide Committee, Family and Friends Celebration, Senior Choir, held the office of secretary of Missionary Department and numerous other positions. Betty was employed with Becton and Dickinson, Sumter, for many years prior to her retirement. She later worked at Santee Lynches Department of Aging. Fond and precious memories will be cherished by: her three devoted daughters, Cassandra Runa Lowery-Thompson of Sumter, Melinda Yvette Lowery (Eric) Andrews of Columbus, GA, Sonia Sheree Lowery (Darius) Scott of Fort Belvoir, VA; one son, Warren White of Bronx, NY; nine loving grandchildren, Nicole (Antonio) Jeter, Willie (Moneta) Thompson, Erika Andrews, Myles (Lauren) Andrews, Darius Scott, Jordyn Scott, Shantell White, Wardell Malloy and Tiara White; eight great grandchildren; four sisters, Martha Beckett, Dorsey Loveless, Helen McNair, all of Toledo, OH, Cherry (Joe) Gaskins of Paterson, NJ; three sisters-in-law, Carrie Gantt, Rosa (Simmy) Jones and Dr. Rev. Mary (Roosevelt) Harvin; and three brothers-in-law, Eddie (Martha) Charles, Thomas “Bubba” (Sarratta) Lowery and Calvin Hastie, all of Sumter; two united women, Colletta Andrews and Lisa Champagne; a host of devoted nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends that are deeply grieved by her passing. Celebration of Life services will be held Saturday, March 12, 2016, 1:00 p. m., from the Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 155 Wall Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Larry C. Weston, pastor, the Rev. Ellis White, Jr., eulogist, Rev. Carolyn Green, officiating, assisted by the Rev. H. K. Phillips, Rev. Anthony L. Taylor, Sr., Rev. English Simon, Jr. and Minister Samuel Smith. The family will receive relatives and friends Friday during the hours of 2:00 – 8:00 p. m. at the home of her daughter, Cassandra Runa Lowery-Thompson, 539 Carrol Drive, Sumter. The Remains will be placed in the church at 12:00 noon. The funeral procession will leave from the home at 12:20 p. m. Flower bearers and Pall bearers will be cousins and friends of the family. Burial will be in the Barnettsville Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, 106 Manville-St. Charles Road, Bishopville.
