Henry Murray Sr.

Henry Murray, Sr., 82, affectionately known as “Snook”, entered his eternal resting place on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Sumter Health and Rehabilitation Center, Sumter. Born in Sumter County, November 30, 1933, he was the son of the late May and Mattie James Chilson Murray. Henry attended the public schools of Sumter County and at an early age he joined St. Luke AME Church. Later, he joined Reid Chapel AME Church, where he faithfully and willingly served in various capacities until he became ill. He was employed with Maxwell Brothers and Blackwell Furniture Company for 35 years before retiring. He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, Almeta “Girlie” Alston Murray of 61 years; his six children, William (Lillie) Pressley, Rev. Henry James (Ruth) Murray, Jr., Elizabeth M. Mack, Mary Wright, Leatha Richardson, all of Sumter, Ronald (Antonia) Murray of Dayton, OH; one adopted brother, Thomas Nelson; sixteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; a special life- long friend, Lester Haynesworth; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A Service of Triumph will be held Friday, July 29, 2016, 1:00 p. m., from the Reid Chapel A. M. E. Church, 1008 Dibert Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Abraham Temoney, Jr., pastor, eulogist, the Rev. Eliza E. Black, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Theodore Y. Black, Rev. Rachael Sinclair, Rev. Debra Bradley, Rev. John Smalls and Elder Andre McBride. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Henry J. and Ruth Murray, Jr., 6405 Fish Road, Dalzell. The Remains will be placed in the church at 12:00 noon. The procession will leave the home at 12:20 p. m. Floral bearers will be Reid Chapel Women Missionary Society, nieces and friends. Pall bearers will be nephews, family and friends. Burial will be in the Hillside Memorial Park, 3001 Cain’s Mill Road, Sumter.
