Mazzie "Jimmie" Rivers , 86,departed this life on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at McCoy Nursing Home, Bishopville.

Born May 31, 1923, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Miller and Janie Stuckey Rivers.

Raised in a Christian home, at a young age she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She has been a life long member of Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church, where she was a faithful member of the Busy Bee and Willing Worker Organization, Stewardess Board No. 2, Women’s Missionary Society and a Sunday School Teacher. She was also a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

Although "Jimmie", as she was affectionate known to those who knew and loved her, was not a biological parent, she was a mother to many in the community by always being sincere and willing to lend a helping hand. Jimmie will be deeply missed by her many friends, and the community, but mostly by her family.

She is survived by her loving siblings, Bessie Simmons of Woodrow, Rebecca Monroe, Vermelle Washington, Mary Frances Wilson and Mary Lee Wilson, all of Bishopville; five nephews, Thomas Oaks of Newark, N. J., whom she reared in her home as her son, along with Larry Spann and Julio Simmons, both of New York, Nathaniel Oaks of Charlotte, N. C., and Legard Oaks of Sumter; one niece, Lisa Byrd of Newark, N. J., along with Jalissa, Jenna and Taj Oaks, whom she reared in her home as great grandchildren; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one sister, and four brothers.



Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m., Friday, January 8, 2010 from the Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church, 2738 Woodrow Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Timothy A. Johnson, Sr., pastor, eulogist.

The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Bessie Simmons, 95 Orange Street, Woodrow.

The Remains will be placed in the church at 1:00 p. m.

The Funeral procession will leave from the home of her sister at 1:30 p. m.

Floral bearers will be Stewardess and members of the Women’s Missionary Society.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Burial will be in the Colclough Cemetery, Sumter.
