Anna Marie Durant Cabbagestalk, 98, took rest in the hands of Mighty YHWH on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Bayshore Medical Center, Holmdel, NJ. Born July 4, 1919, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Elliot and Evelyn McPerson Durant. “Mamie”, as she was affectionately called by everyone, grew up as the youngest of 18 children and was educated in the public school system of Sumter County. At an early age she gave her life to Christ and was baptized while attending a Holy Convocation service in New York City, NY with her father. Mamie met and after time was wedded to McKinley Cabbagestalk in October 1940. After the birth of their two sons, they moved to Newark, NJ, where she furthered her faith as a member of Union Community Baptist Church. Mamie was gainfully employed at Safeway Lunch Vending Company, Remco Toy Company and Kurr Glass Company after moving to Cliffwood, NJ. In 1991, they moved back home to live once again upon their roots of Sumter. She and McKinley embraced where it all started from and furthered their memories until he preceded her in death on January 14, 1999. Found in failing health, her two sons moved her back to New Jersey, where she was carefully observed and closely cared for with the extraordinary help of her daughter-in-law, Andre Cabbagestalk. God blessed Mother Anna “Mamie” Cabbagestalk with a wonderful family line. She was preceded in death by fourteen brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her two sons, McKinley Jr. and David; daughters-in-law, Andre Cabbagestalk and Phyllis Wright; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
