Verlie “MaeBell” Johnson, 96, entered peacefully into her eternal rest on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at her residence. Born April 22, 1922, in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Mary Johnson Jenkins. She attended the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and became a faithful member of the Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church, where she served diligently as a member of the Senior Usher Board, Gospel Choir, Senior Unity Choir, Burrows Missionary Society, Stewardess Board # 3 and a dedicated scholar of Sunday school Class # 1. She was also a member of the Twelve Tribe of Israel. She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Rosa (Bobby) Brisbon of the home and Mamie (Lutrell) Basnight of Plymouth, NC; one son, Albert Jenkins of Waldorf, MD; twelve grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. She was blessed to have been a mother figure to her sibling’s children who loved, respected and accepted her as their mother, James Jenkins, David and Mary Green, Elease Diggs and Elizabeth Monroe, all whom lives in various locations. She also leaves a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly. The family is receiving relatives and friends at her home, 5225 Cotton Acres Road, Sumter. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 7, 2018, 12 noon, from the Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church, 2738 Woodrow Road, Highway 441, Woodrow, with the Rev. Dr. Friendly J. Gadson, pastor, eulogist. The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a. m. The procession will leave from her home at 11:30 a. m. Burial will be in the Mt. Olive Memorial Garden, Pear Street, Sumter.
