Evelyn Dow, 67,  responded to the deem of God to translate into a better life while surrounded by her loving family on Monday, March 22, 2010 in New Jersey.


Born January 14, 1943, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Dow and Rosa Lee Mills.

Evelyn received her education in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Ebenezer High School. She retired from the General Motors Corporation in 2006 after 38 years of service.

The Church was an integral part of Evelyn’s life. She was a member of St. James A. M. E. Church, Newark, N. J. for over 35 years. As an active member of St. James A. M. E. Church, she served on the Co-Ed Usher Board, where she was the treasurer for several years. Evelyn was a precious gem that had the ability to make visitors feel at home with her quick smile, friendly hand shake and kind words. She was an avid traveler and enjoyed bowling.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories: two sisters, Lillian Trawick (James) and Gloria Mickens (Carl), both of Maplewood, N. J.; nieces, Barbara, Jessica, Osha, Danielle and Samantha; nephews, Eric, Chris, EJ and Tracy; aunts, Frances Elliard of Deer Park, Long Island, N. Y. and Queen Mills of Sumter; a devoted confidant and friend, Harvis Edwards; a host of cousins and friends galore.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m., Saturday, March 27, 2010 from the St. Luke A. M. E. Church, St. Paul’s Church Road, Sumter, with Rev. Robert R. Hooper, pastor, eulogist, assisted by Rev. Sammie L. Gary, Rev. Clarence Hunter, and Rev. Lula Gary.


The family will received friends at the family home 1990 St. Paul Church Road, Sumter.

The Remains will be placed in the church at 1:00 p. m.

The funeral procession will leave from the family home at 1:30 p. m.

Floral Bearers will be members of the Elouise Bradford Women’s Missionary Society.

Pall Bearers will be Cousins and Officers.

Burial will be in the St. Luke A. M. E. Church Yard Cemetery, Sumter.
