Irvin Roach, Sr., 79, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at his home. Born in Sumter County on July 30, 1930, he was a son of the late Willie and Matilda Prioleau Roach.
At an early age he distinguished himself as a Christian and joined High Hills A. M. E. Church, where he maintained his membership and served in many organizations. He was a member of the Trustee Board for many years, and men Church School Class.
He attended the public schools of Sumter County and was employed with the Army and Air Force Exchange for 37 years at Shaw Air Force Base. As a farmer, he enjoyed raising live stock and chickens. He loved to fish, hunt and especially work in his garden.
He was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Elizabeth Logan Roach for 58 years until her passing. This marriage was blessed with seven children.
He leaves to cherish his memories: three daughters, Annie Bell and Shirley Roach, both of Sumter, Christine (Homer) Bridges of Columbia; four sons, David (Ernestine) Roach of Dalzell, Irvin (Deborah) Roach, Jr. of Hopkins, William Roach and John Roach, both of Sumter; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; one step grandchild; three step grandchildren; one brother, James Roach, Sr. of Sumter; two sisters, Amelia Alston of Sumter and Wilhelmina Keith of Steelton, PA; one sister-in-law, Viola Logan Roach of Sumter; one brother-in-law, Joe Louis Logan of Harrisburg, PA; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a. m., Friday, June 25, 2010 from the High Hills AME Church 6780 Meeting House Road, Dalzell, with Rev. Thomas Habersham, pastor, Rev. Dr. James S. Cooper, eulogist, assisted by Rev. Ruth E. Robinson-Wiley, presiding, and Rev. Henry J. Murray.
The family will receive friends at his home of 5435 Sid John Road, Sumter
The Remains will be placed in the church at 10:30 a. m.
The funeral procession will leave from his home at 11:00 a. m.
Floral bearers will be The Women’s Missionary Society and nieces.
Pall bearers will be Trustees and Nephews.
Burial will be in the High Hills A. M. E. Church Yard Cemetery, Dalzell.
