Evelyn Anderson Capers, 89, was called home to glory on the evening of December 25, 2010 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Patterson, NJ. Born April 28, 1921 in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Martha Sargeant Anderson.
She received her formal education in the public school of Sumter County. She became a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA) at an early age.
Evelyn relocated to Paterson over fifty years ago, where she became a member of Unity Missionary Church. She served as Sunday School Superintendent from 1965 – 1997. She served as a faithful member until she took ill in May 2008. She was employed by Fashion Sports and later by Paterson Lamp Shade Company from which she retired in 1985.
She leaves to cherish precious memories: one sister, Annabell Anderson of Philadelphia, PA; one son Willie J. Capers, and two daughters, Geneva Carter (Ricardo A. Carter, Sr.), Syneita Capers, all of Paterson, NJ; adopted daughter, Jean Montgomery; three grandsons, John E. Anderson, Jr. of Newark, NJ, William R. Capers, Ricardo A. Carter, Jr. of Paterson, NJ; adopted grandson, Kenny Montgomery; four granddaughter, Lin Wade (John) of West Orange, NJ, Caleen Anderson of Newark, NJ, Tanya Carter of Paterson, NJ, Angela Carter of Jacksonville, FL; adopted granddaughter, Tonda Dillon; three great grandsons, Carlton J. Hintzen, Devon McKenzie and Tyler J. Wade; adopted great granddaughters, Jaime, Sidney, Angelic; adopted great grandson, Javon; god daughter, Egertha Dennett; daughter-in-law, Ludelia Anderson; sister-in-law, Vermelle Capers of Sumter; brother-in-law, Hosea Capers of Hollywood, FL; her very dedicated and faithful friends, Sis. Rose Cooper, Sis. Lottie Pickette, Sis. Corrine Gordon and Sis. Eva Gamble; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson B. Capers; one son, John E. Anderson; four brothers, Alex, James, Joseph and Wesley Anderson; two sisters, Maggie Bentley and Lizanne Abrams; and her two best friends, Luella Williams and Angie Jones.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m., Friday, January 7, 2011 from the John Wesley Williams, Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc. 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Johnny Moore, officiating, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Georgia Mae Walker.
Interment will be in the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Yard Cemetery, Dalzell.
