Joseph Elijah Wilson

Joseph Elijah Wilson,  75, husband of Hattie Lowery Wilson,  departed this life on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Magnolia Manor of Columbia, Columbia.  Born in St. Charles on July 4, 1935, he was the son of the late Laddie and Estelle Wilson Anderson.

Joseph attended the public schools of Lee County, and was retired from the South Carolina Highway Department of Public Transportation, where he was known as “Papa Smurf”.

Broth Wilson  was a member of Enon Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a member of the Enon Men of God (EMOG) Ministry.  He previously served as an Associate Minister at The Church of God by Faith in Pinewood from 1986 - 1990.  He was a Master Mason at St. Paul #35, F & AM.  He was a handyman and loved fixing things.  His favorite scripture was John 14:1-4. 

Brother Wilson leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife,  Hattie Lowery Wilson;  two daughters, Annie Wilson Bragdon (Luis) Galaz-Guzman of Bradenton, FLA and Sergeant Major Retired Mary Logan (First Sergeant Retired James) Aurtrey of Indianapolis, IND;  two sisters, Bessie Lee Williams and Lillie Lawson of Sumter;  two brothers, David (Isa Mae) Anderson of Wilmington, NC and Laddie Anderson of Hampton, VA;  one sister-in-law, Martha Mae Anderson of St. Charles; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren;  nine great-great grandchildren; a special goddaughter, Vernice Brunson of Pinewood; a special aunt, Rosa Lee Logan of Pinewood;  a host of  nieces,  nephews,   relatives, and  friends.

He was preceded in death by his stepson, Henry Spencer Logan; .two brothers, George and Eugene Anderson; a brother-in-law, Nathaniel Williams and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Anderson.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 p. m., Thursday, March 31, 2011 from the Enon Missionary Baptist Church, 3805 Starks Ferry Road,  Sumter  with  Pastor Stanley E. Hayes, Sr., pastor,  eulogist, the Rev. Rossi Ramsey, presiding, assisted by  the Rev. Joseph B. Johnson and Rev. Georgia Walker .

The Family will receive friends at the home 10 Gordon Street, Pinewood.

The Remains will be placed in the Church at 2:30 p. m.

The procession will leave from the family home at 2:50 p. m.

Floral bearers and Pall bearers will family and friends.

Burial will be in the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Pinewood.
