James Edward Davis, Sr.
May 20, 1929 to May 02, 2011




James Edward Davis, Sr.,  81,   who was lovingly known as “Sonny” was a remarkable man, tall in stature, but humble in heart, departed this earthly life on Monday, May 2, 2011 at his residence in Sumter County..  Born in Lee County on May 20, 1929, he was the son of  the late Walter Davis and Hettie Gass Davis.

“Sonny” attended the public schools of Sumter County.  At an early age he joined Antioch United Methodist Church, where he served s a member of the United Methodist Men,  Usher Board and the Board of Trustees.  His strong work ethic was exemplified in the five decades that he was employed as a faithful and loyal member of Melvin Brown Farms.  He continued his service as a Master Mason member of the Liberty Hill Masonic Lodge No. 357.

James is survived by: his children, James (Jackie) Davis, Jr. of Plainfield, N. J.,  Rosa Mae Davis Jones of Jersey City, N. J.,  Diann (Ernest) Davis Frierson of Lynchburg,  Johnny Lee (Mary) Davis and Warren Davis of Sumter,  Bettie Jean (Kevin) Davis Wicks of Columbia, Loris Geneva (Felix) Davis Williams of Fort Bragg, N. C.,  Wilfred Bernard (Jennifer) Davis of Detroit Arsenal Warren, MI;   three sisters: L. Gene Davis, Lillie Mae (Ben - deceased) Moses,  Elizabeth Davis;  two brothers, William Davis (Rosa – deceased) Davis and Walter (Frances)Davis; a special and devoted niece, Caroline Davis;  a host of  grandchildren, great grandchildren, other nieces, nephews, other relatives and  friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, May 7, 2011 from the Antioch United Methodist Church, 4040 Dubose Siding Road, Sumter,   with  the Rev. Barbara L. Reid, pastor,  Rev. Ernest W. Frierson, eulogist,  Rev. Joyce M. Chiles, presiding,  assisted by  Rev. George Hilton .

The family will receive friends at the home 2745 Lowder Road,  Sumter.

The Marshall Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 239 and the Liberty Hill Masonic Lodge No. 357 Final Rites will be conducted  6:00 p. m., Friday from the John Wesley Williams, Sr. Memorial Chapel,  Williams Funeral Home, Inc.  821 North Main Street, Sumter.

The Remains will be placed in the church at 11:00 a. m.

The funeral procession will leave from the home at 11:15 a. m.

Floral bearers will be Marshall Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 239.

Pall bearers will be Liberty Hill Masonic Lodge No. 357.

Interment will be in the Antioch United Methodist  Church Cemetery, Sumter.
