Ellen Jones Jefferson, 86, transitioned from earth to Glory to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter. She endured a short fight with illness, but through it all she continued to believe and trust in God. Born September 22, 1924 in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Vanderbilt Jones and Lillian Roach Jones.
She received her education in South Carolina until she moved to New Jersey. Mrs. Jefferson was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church. She was a God fearing woman who enjoyed listening to gospel music. She loved and cared for animals, especially cats like they were her own. Most of all, she was known as the “Queen of the sewing machine”. She loved to sew garments, pillows, curtains and quilts.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory: one brother, Willie (Juanita) Jones of Cranford, N. J.; one sister, Ernestine Holmes of Baltimore, MD; a special grandson, Shakil Miller of the home; twelve grand children; eighteen great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Jefferson, Sr.; four sisters, Moneta Tate, Mamie Brooks, Tance Baldwin and Catherine McCain; three brothers, Vanderbilt Jones, Jr., Richard Jones and Melvin Jones.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a. m., Thursday, May 26, 2011 from the Union Baptist Church, 5840 Spring Hill Road, Rembert, with the Rev. Willie Dennis, Pastor, Eulogist.
The family will receive friends at the family home 3060 Marie Drive, Sumter.
The Remains will be placed in the church at 10:00 a. m.
The procession will leave from the family home 3060 Marie Drive, Sumter at 10:20 a. m.
The floral bearers and pall bearers will be family and friends.
Burial will be in the Union Baptist Church Yard Cemetery, Rembert.
