Annie Pinkney Porter

Annie Pinkney Porter, 85, the daughter of the late Mr. Andrew and Mrs. Maggie Bennett Pinkney; was born June 6, 1926 in Sumter County. She entered into eternal rest on Friday, July 22, 2011 at Tuomey Healthcare System, Sumter.

   At an early age, Ann accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined St. Phillips United Methodist Church.  After the closing of  St. Phillips, she joined St. Luke A. M. E. Church, where she worked diligently and faithfully in the following ministries until her health failed: President of Stewardess Board No. 2,  Treasurer of the Eloise Bradford Women Missionary Society and the Steward Board.

   Mrs. Porter was a life long citizen of Sumter County and received her early education from the Sumter County Public Schools.  She graduated from Ebenezer Junior High School.  She received her high school diploma and Bachelor of Arts Degree from Morris College, Sumter, SC; and did further study at South Carolina State University, the University of South Carolina, and Norfolk State University.

   Ann loved children and provided over fifty years of dedicated service in the field of education.  She was a member of several professional organizations including the Sumter County Educational Association, the South Carolina Education Association, and the National Education Association.

   Mrs. Porter was a kind, compassionate, witty, full of life person who possessed an accepting smile. She was an inspiration to her family and others who knew her.

   She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Mr. Louis W. Porter. They were the proud parents of one son, Mr. Barry Porter.

   Those left to cherish her memory include: her son, Mr. Barry Porter of Lancaster, TX; one sister, Mrs. Britanna (Leroy) Pinkney Cromartie of Sumter; one foster sister, Mrs. Doretha (Kirven) McGee; three grandchildren, Ms. Tretena “Puddin” Adams of the home; Ms. Maya Porter and Mr. Barry “Rashad” Porter of Lancaster, TX; one brother-in-law, Bishop Nathaniel Porter of Washington, DC; two sisters-in-law, Anna Dell McAlister of Philadelphia, PA  and Alethia B. Porter of Raleigh, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 28, 2011 from the St. Luke A. M. E. Church, 2355 North St. Pauls Church Road, Sumter, with the Reverend E. Robert Thomas, pastor,  eulogist, assisted by Rev. Dr. Lula Gary and Rev. Debbie Bowen-Davis.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1008 North Main Street, Sumter.

The Remains will be placed in the church at 10:00 a. m.

The funeral procession will leave from the home at 10:30 a.m.  

Floral bearers will be nieces and members of the Women Missionary Society of the St. Luke A. M. E. Church.

Pall bearers will be nephews, and Stewards and Trustees of  the St. Luke A. M. E. Church,.

Burial will be in the Hillside Memorial Park,  Sumter.
