Clarie Gregg Clark
Mar 08, 1920 to Aug 18, 2011

Clarie Gregg Clark, 91, who was affectionately known as “Big Ma” was an extraordinary woman, who was short in stature, big at heart, and full of wisdom, was granted her angel wings, Thursday, August 18, 2011 at her residence in St. Charles.  Born in Sumter County on March 8, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Robert McDonald and Tom and Rosa Lee Gregg.

Clarie attended the public schools of Lee County.  At an early age she accepted Christ as her Savior and became a faithful member of Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church, where she served as a member of the United Methodist Women, Usher Board, held Mother of the Church, for many years and sung angelically on the Senior Choir during her latter years until her health began to decline.  “Big Ma” loved to worship the Lord and sing praised unto Him.  She never met a stranger she could not relate with.  They were instantly drawn to the light that shined so deep within her.

She was dedicated to caring for those around her.  She provided nourishment, care and spiritual guidance to those who sought her wisdom.  She was especially reverenced by her many descendents of grandchildren who were blessed to have a relationship with their grandmother of countless generations.

In her teenage years, Clarie was joined in marriage to the late Joseph “Nick” Clark.  This union was anointed by God and their love became the foundation for so many around them.  Their home was a safe haven and their children enjoyed being in their presence as they were raised to live purpose filled lives.

She leaves to cherish her memories: nine devoted children, Dorothy (Leroy) Toney of Wasacky,  Jessie Mae Peterson and Evelyn Conyers, both of St. Charles, Sadie Burroughs and Linda (Otis) Wilson, both of Sumter,  Joseph (Patricia) Clark and James (Phyllis) Clark, both of St. Charles, Joseph (Carrie Lou) Wells and Harry (Loris) Wells, both of Sumter;  two sisters, Mary Mack of Sumter, and Gladys Murray of Washington, DC;  two daughters-in-law, Edna Clark of Washington, D. C. and Essie D. Clark of Sumter;  one brother-in-law, Nathaniel Butler of Sumter; forty grandchildren; forty six great grandchildren; one hundred six great-great grandchildren; seventeen great great-great grandchildren;      a multitude of nieces and nephews, other sorrowing relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sons, Robert, Charlie, and Willie Clark; three sisters, Francis Gorman, Rosa Lee Rock and Margaret Butler;  two brothers-in-law, Abraham Rock and William Murray;  one daughter-in-law, Georgia Mae Clark; one son-in-law, Charlie Peterson and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 24, 2011 from the Unionville A. M. E. Church,  1330 Swimming  Pen Road,   St. Charles, with the Reverend Alvin Webb, pastor,  the Rev.
