John "Jay" Williams, 71, husband of Jeannie Stuckey Williams, departed this earthly life on Monday, June 1, 2009 at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence. Born in Lee County on April 19, 1938, he was a son of Evelyn Bracey Peterson and Jonus Williams.
John was educated in the public schools of Lee County. He was employed with Suburban Propane Gas Company, where he retired in 1991 after more than 23 years of service.
He loved music - "any kind of music". He sung with the National Cloud of Joy for 46 years. He also played lead guitar. John began his career in 1979 as a Gospel Promoter with Radio Station WAGS which continued for 30 years. His motto was "I’ll do all I can to help you, while keeping my promise". A man for all people.
Surviving to cherish his memories: his loving wife, Jeannie; two daughters, Cynthia Williams Hyman of Sumter, and Ashley Nicole Williams of Camden; two step daughters, Tifphane Hickmon (Israel) of Rembert and Latasha Rogers Spann (Errien) of Bishopville; two sons, Al Williams of Bishopville and Kevin Williams of Atlanta, GA; eleven sisters, Martha Simon, Mary (Jessie) Hinton, and Janie Addison, all of Patterson, NJ, Rachael Reed of Raleigh, NC, Lucille Reed of Wendell, NC, Elizabeth (Ronald) Smiley of Alabama, Vivian Williams and Lillian (Raymond) Vaught of Zebulon, NC, Rosa Lee Williams, Elaine Williams and Marjorie Sharon (Henry) Lane, all of Brooklyn, NY; four brothers, Thomas Bracey of Patterson, NJ, Willie Bracey of Sumter, John Williams, Jr. of Brooklyn, NY, James Nelson Williams of New York; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Delores; a step son, Reggie Reddick; three sisters, Annie Bell Hinton, Shirley Williams and Shirley Wilson; and three brothers, Mack Bracey, David Williams and Ernest Williams.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a. m., Friday, June 5, 2009 from the Lee Central High School Auditorium, 1800 Wysacky Highway, Bishopville, with the Reverend Julia V. Sanders, pastor of Jerusalem-Stuckey Baptist Church, officiating, eulogist, assisted by Rev. Willie Wilson and Minister Rickey Stuckey.
The family will receive friends at the home 175 Royer Road, Bishopville.
The Remains will be placed in the Auditorium at 10:00 a. m.
The funeral procession will leave from the home at 10:20 a. m.
Floral Bearers will be nieces and friends.
Pall Bearers will be nephews and friends.
Burial will be in the Jerusalem-Stuckey Baptist Church Cemetery, Bishopville.
