Oscar Yates, Jr.,  81,   answered  God’s call to his eternal rest and passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2011  at Sumter Health and Rehab,  Sumter.   Born January 28, 1930 in Sumter County,  he was a son of the late Oscar Yates, Sr. and Anna Johnson Yates.  He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County.  He worked as a coal deliverer at an early age. 

He was a life long member of Saint Mark United Methodist Church.  He was married to Lucille Brown Yates.  To this union, one child was born.

He leaves a multitude of family members and friends to celebrate his life and mourn of  his death.  They include a loving wife, Lucille Yates;  one son,  Oscar “Bobby” Yates III; three  grandchildren;  two great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews  and friends.  

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred Yates, McKenzie Yates and Robert Lee Yates, and two sisters,  Elizabeth Yates Pringle and Gustaria Yates Wheeler.

Funeral  services will be  held 12:00 noon,  Wednesday,  September 14, 2011  from  The   Saint Mark United Methodist Church,  1093 Oswego Road,  Sumter,   with the Rev. Telley Lynnette Gadson, pastor, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Robert Thompson

The family will receive friends at the home  205 Lawrence Street, Sumter.

The Remains will be placed in the church at 11:00 a. m.

The procession will leave from the home at 11:30 a. m.

Floral bearers will be nieces and United Methodist Women. 

Pall bearers will be United Methodist Men.

Burial will be in the Saint Mark United Methodist Church Cemetery, Sumter.
