Johnny M. Robinson peacefully departed this earthly life on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at his home in Detroit, Michigan with his family. Born in Sumter County “Rembert” on October 12, 1914, he was the son of the late Deacon David and Sarah Dow Robinson.
Johnny left Sumter at the age of 13 to seek employment and landed in Washington, DC. He later relocated to New York, NY then to Buffalo. While in Buffalo, God blessed him with a beautiful daughter. In 1953, he arrived in Detroit, Michigan, where life was full of excitement, entrepreneurship opportunities, and full time employment with Ford Motor. While in Detroit, he married the late Gladys Robinson and after her death, he found his soul mate Sandra Gentry and they exchanged vows on August 18, 1979. He retired from Ford Motor in 1983 and has enjoyed his retirement years with his loving wife, family and friends. He loved watching baseball, horse racing, entertaining, playing cards, driving Cadillac’s and spending time with his family and friend.
Mr. Robinson has seen decades of changes during his 97 wonderful years of life. Johnny is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Gentry Robinson; one daughter, Sharon Miller of Jacksonville, FLA; two sons, Johnny and Vernon of Detroit, MI; five grandchildren, Gladzena Young of Jacksonville, FL, Darren Sr. of Columbus, Ohio, Johnny and Sandra Gentry and Monea of Detroit, MI; three great grandchildren, Darren II of Jacksonville, FLA, Shldon of Detroit, MI and Deanna of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Magnolia Robinson Williams and Edna Robinson Goldston, both of Sumter; six sisters-in-law, Clara Robinson of Washington, DC, Dorothy Wilson Baker, Sheryl Smith (Charlie), Vanessa Charleston, Vianne Gentry, Phillis Gentry Scott of Detroit, MI; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and one life long time friend Tobacco Chewing Ruth.
Many love ones have preceded him in death, eight siblings, Elease Robinson Dinkins, Willie Dean Robinson Brevard, Russell Robinson, Rev. Joseph Robinson, Sarah Robinson Mayrant, Martha Robinson Dinkins, Mamie Robinson Hyman and James Robinson; and two brothers-in-law, James and Lewis Gentry.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a. m., Friday, February 17, 2012 from the Dexter Chapel of McFall Brothers Funeral Home, Inc., 9141 Dexter Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan.
Family visitation will be Friday, February 17, 2012 from 10:30 a. m. to the hour of service.
