God saw Brother was getting tired and in pain, so He called him home for eternal rest. Alston Grant, Jr., 70, departed this earthly life on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Sumter Valley Nursing Home, Sumter. Born in Sumter on April 10, 1941, he was the eldest son of the late Alston Grant, Sr. and Thelma Dawson Grant.
Brother, as he was affectionately nick-named, joined the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. His devotion in church as well as home allowed him to be compassionate to others. He was employed with Sumter School District Two for 19 years working as a custodian at Hillcrest Middle School. He was well known, loved and made friends wherever he went. In 1980 after his father, Alston Grant, Sr. died, he returned home from New York to take care of his mother, Thelma Dawson Grant. Just one of the many things he did for family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted sister, Carrie Grant and a niece, Mia Oaks of the home. He also leaves to cherish his sweet memories, a brother, Dawson (Mildred) Grant of Tampa, FL., and a sister, Pearline (Eugene) Mustan of Dalzell; three aunts, Louise Tisdale of Maryland, Janice Jenkins of Queens, N. Y. and Rosa Reed of Dalzell; one uncle, James Grant of New Jersey; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and close friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Boyd Lawrence Grant.
