God in His infinite wisdom saw fit for William Wiley, Sr., 71, to be rewarded with the prize of the high calling. On Wednesday afternoon, March 28, 2012, he was called to eternal rest and went peacefully. William, “affectionately known as “Big Mac” was born in Sumter on January 5, 1941. He was the first of five children born to the late Grace Wiley Singleton.
At an early age, William was baptized and converted at High Hills A. M. E. Church, where he was a faithful member of the Sons of Allen, Lay Organization, Male Chorus, Senior Gospel Choir and numerous other auxiliary with in the church.
William was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He was a graduate of Ebenezer High School, Dalzell, Class of 1961.
William was united in Holy Matrimony to Rosa Lee Gathers in 1962. In addition to his wife and family, William loved cooking, barbequing, raising livestock and fishing. A gentle giant of a man, beloved by everyone he knew, lived his life abundantly. To know him provided family and friends an opportunity to meet a man of great stature with a big heart and an humble spirit. He demonstrated his love for the community by his involvement in the Ebenezer Class of 1961 altruistic projects.
William was employed with Eastern Brick & Tile, Shaw Air Force Base MWR, the NCO Club and Sumter School District # 2.
Those left to cherish precious memories include: a devoted wife, Rosa Lee Wiley; two sons, Richard (Barbara) Wiley of North Pole, Alaska and William (Lakisha) Wiley, Jr. of Sandusky, Ohio; two daughters, Frances (James) Stuckey of Rembert and Melissa (Timothy) Wiley-Thompson of Dalzell; a devoted daughter-in-law, Mary F. Gathers of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; a loving brother, George Wiley of Sumter; five sisters-in-law; nine grandchildren; four great grand children; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Grace; a son, John F. Gathers; and two brothers, Benjamin S. Wiley and John W. Singleton, Sr.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m., Thursday, April 5, 2012 from the High Hills A. M. E. Church, 6780 Meeting House Road, Dalzell with the Rev. Thomas Habersham, pastor, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Linda Richbow and Rev. Emanuel Davis.
The family is receiving friends at the family home 7 Sandra Court, Wedgefield.
A wake service will be held 6:00 – 7:00 p. m., Wednesday, April 4, 2012 in the John Wesley Williams, Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc. 821 North Main Street, Sumter.
The Remains will be placed in the church at 1:00 p. m.
The funeral cortege will leave from his home at 1:20 p. m.
Flora bearers will be the Class of 1961.
Pall bearers will be the Class of 1961 and Sons of Allen.
Burial will be in the High Hills A. M. E. Church Yard Cemetery, Dalzell.
