Fred Arterius Jordan, 98, departed this earthly life on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Sumter Health and Rehabilitation Center, Sumter. Born in Paterson, N. J. on June 19, 1913, he was the son of the late Andrew Jordan and Roxanna Whelch. He attended the public schools of Paterson, N. J.
At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and affiliated himself with the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church family.
Fred joined the United States Navy in 1944. During his tour of duty as a Seaman First Class, he received the following Awards and Citations: Navy Campaign Seal Award, The Victory Ribbon WWII Award, American Campaign Ribbons and the ASTATIC – Pacific Campaign Ribbon. He was a member of the American Legion while living in Paterson, N. J.
He leaves to cherish his memories: four daughters, Mary Frances (Earl) Dean of Navarre, FLA, Annie Bell (Louis) Spann of Paterson, N. J., Barbara (Eugene) Kennedy of Seat Pleasant, MD and Marie Lippman of Paterson, N. J.; one son, Frank Belton of Paterson, N. J.; one brother-in-law, James (Lorraine) Prescott of Saginaw, MI; one sister-in-law, Bertha (John) Parrott of Sumter; one daughter-in-law, Willie Mae Spann of Paterson, N. J.; one son-in-law, Levy Jackson of Sumter; twelve grandchildren, Pamela, Michelle, Dalanda Spann of Paterson, N. J., Salima Clark of Hackensack, N. J.; Quoreisha (Bernard) Redmond of Franklin Lakes, N. J., Kia (Mark) Edwards of Lawrenceville, GA, Judia (Mustamirr) Hagler of Monmouth Junction, N. J., Shaquanda Lippman of Paterson, N. J., Loshawn, Tyesha, Myeva Spann and Michael Prescott of Sumter; twenty great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Jordan; his mother, Roxanna Whelch; his wife, Lillie Mae Jordan; two sons, Isaac Jordan and Eugene Spann; a daughter, Corine Spann; and his mother-in-law, Marie Prescott.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, Thursday, April 19, 2012 from the John Wesley Williams, Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc. 821 North Main Street, Sumter with the Rev. Dr. Ernest Jackson, officiating, eulogist.
The funeral cortege will leave from Quality Inn of Sumter, 2390 Broad Street, Sumter at 11:30 a. m.
Flora bearers will be granddaughters and great grand daughters.
Pall bearers will be family and friends.
Burial will be in the Mechanicsville United Methodist Churchyard Cemetery, Ashwood Community, Bishopville.
