Leona “Lee” Ellerbe Gary, 69, departed this life on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at her home in Rembert. She silently left this earthly abode to dwell in the home not made with hands, whose maker and builder is God. Her soul winged its flight from the world of sickness to a place of eternal rest. Born in Sumter County on November 26, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Johnny and Corine Richardson Ellerbe. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. She was baptized and gave her life to Christ at an early age at Union Baptist Church, Rembert, until her health started to decline.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, great aunt, godmother and friend, most of all she was a child of God. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Ben Gary. This union was blessed with two loving children.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories: her two loving children, Pennie Jean Gary and Angel Singleton (Don) Myers, both of Rembert; three grandchildren, Trevor, Tyler and Don Myers, Jr., all of Rembert; five godchildren, Carolyn English and Randal English of Rembert, Jason Ellerbe and Monica Bolden Watkins of Sumter, and Tangela McCaskell of Lugoff; one sister, Geraldine (Sammie) Carroll of Dalzell; four brothers, Olden (Shirley) Ellerbe, Frank (Josephine) Ellerbe, both of Rembert, Dargan Ellerbe of Sumter, Sammie (Toni) Ellerbe of Baltimore, MD; three aunts, Sally (Donnie) Alston of Rembert, Annie Lee Richardson of Philadelphia, PA, Eliza Richardson of Maryland; one brother-in-law; five sisters-in-law; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Corine “Ethel” English, Lavenia Bolden and Jessai Ellerbe.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p. m., Friday, April 27, 2012 from the Union Baptist Church, 5840 Spring Hill Road, Rembert, with the Rev. Willie Dennis, pastor, eulogist.
The family is receiving friends at her home 3789 Furman Field Road, Rembert.
The funeral procession will leave from her home at 12:20 p. m.
Floral bearers will be nieces.
Pall bearers will be nephews.
Burial will be in the Union Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, Rembert.
