Joseph Kirkland, Sr.

Joseph Kirkland, Sr., 70, husband of Alta Mae Dinkins Kirkland, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Tuomey Health Care System, Sumter. Born in Sumter County on May 11, 1939, he was the son of the late James Kirkland and Caroline Alston Kirkland Dennis.

 

He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He was employed with Eastern Brick "N" Title for many years, then he later started working at Boyle Machinery until his health failed.

Joe was a very compassionate individual who loved and cherished his family. He was an all purpose man, meaning he could and would do many things that we could do, even though he was confined to a wheelchair.

Joe leaves to cherish precious memories: a devoted, loving and caring wife of 49 years, Alta Mae Dinkins Kirkland; three sons, Harvey (Naomi) Kirkland, Joseph (Denise) Kirkland, Jr., Raymond (Lasheon) Kirkland, and one daughter, Latasha Kirkland, all of Rembert; one dedicated grand daughter who was raised in the home as his own, Latonya Fluellen; two sisters, Marie (Charlie) Jones of Camden and Elizabeth Bennett of Dalzell; five brothers, James Kirkland of Texas, Rev. Alston (Catherine) Kirkland of Rockville, MD, Thomas (Louise) Kirkland, Henry Kirkland of Rembert, Rev. Leroy (Vivian) Dennis of Orlando, FL; eight grand children, Ashley, Kenyetta, Shannetta, Dominique, Quandell, Talesha, Kanasia, Tenachas; one special grandson, Jovonte; one great grandson, Dashaud; one uncle; six aunts; two brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; a special friend, Brother Joe Jasper; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one loving daughter, Rosena Kirkland, nine brothers and seven sisters.

 

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m., Sunday, June 21, 2009 from Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Highway 521 North, Rembert, with Rev. Anthony Taylor, Sr., pastor, eulogist, assisted by Evangelist Glenda Miller, Rev. Willie Dennis, Rev. William Sanders and Rev. Leroy Dennis.

The family will receive friends at the family home 6785 Camden Highway, Rembert.

The funeral procession will leave from the family home at 1:30 p. m.

Floral Bearers and Pall Bearers will be the family and friends.

Burial will be in the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Yard Cemetery.
