Flora G Robinson
Aug 20, 1914 to Jun 04, 2012

Flora Gathers Robinson, widow of Frank “Yank” Robinson, began her beautiful journey of life on Thursday, August 20, 1914 and passed peacefully from her home into heaven  ninety seven years later on Monday, June 4, 2012.  She was the daughter of the late James and Amelia Morant Gathers.

She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and employed at Shaw Air Force Base and John Frank Williams’ Estate.  She was a lifelong member of Wayman Chapel AME  Church, where she served faithfully in many capacities until her health failed, including the Stewardess Board, Wilhelmina “Sweetheart” Burgess Missionary Society and the honor of serving as the “Mother of the Church”.

Flora was united in Holy Matrimony to Frank “Yank” Robinson. The spelling of her name best describes her qualities as a person: Friendly, loving, outspoken, realistic and admired.  Her lively and jovial personality will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her.  She was the same with everyone she came in contact with and helped so many people during her life time.

She leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted son, Rodney (Ivy) Robinson of Dalzell;  an adoring daughter-in-law, Angie Gathers of Sumter; four loving grandchildren, Darryll (Cynthia) Gadson of Durham, NC, Deirdre Robinson of Fontana, CA, Dominique Robinson and Travis Sanders, both of Charlotte, NC; three loving step-grandchildren, Jamie Skinner, Devan Maple and Brandon Maple, all of Dalzell; three great grand children, Shera (Bryan) Watson, Shauna (Philip) Brady and Sharla Gadson, and two great great-grandchildren, Brendan Brady and Julian Watson, all of Durham, NC; one step great great grandchild, Patrick Fortier of Dalzell; a loving and caring sister, Elnora Gathers of Wedgefield; a dedicated brother, Frank Gather of New York, NY;  a host of nieces,  nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Sammie Lee Gathers; four sisters, Amelia Edwards, Sallie Choice, Rosa Lee Gathers, Georgianna Moore, and five brothers, Charlie, Eddie, Benjamin, Caroline and George Gathers.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p. m., Saturday, June 9, 2012 from the Wayman Chapel AME Church, 160 North Kings Highway,  Sumter,  with the Rev. Laddie Howard, pastor,  eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Charlie Howard, and the Rev. Thomas Habersham.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her son, Rodney Robinson, 6330 Fish Road, Dalzell.

The remains will be placed in the church at 2:00 p. m.

The funeral procession will leave 2:30 p. m. from the home of her son.

Floral bearers will be the Wilhelmina “Sweetheart” Burgess Missionary Society.

Pall bearers will be nephews and cousins.

Burial will be in the Wayman Chapel A. M. E. Church Yard Cemetery, Sumter.
