Bertha Spann Green, 72, wife of George Thomas Green, departed this life on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Tuomey Health Care System, Sumter. Born May 10, 1940 in Abbeville, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Hassie Mae Porter Spann.
Bertha attended school in Abbeville, ALA and was a high school graduate. In 1960, she moved to Newark, N. J., where she met, fell in love and was joined in Holy Matrimony with George Thomas Green. To this union three children were born, Jerome, Fredrick and Evette.
Bertha accepted Christ at an early age. While living in Roselle, N. J., she was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church, where she sang on the choir. Upon moving to Sumter, she joined Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member until her health failed.
Bertha worked as a teacher’s aid and bus driver for Union County in Roselle until she retired. She participated in many community activities and volunteered to assist and help others as often as she could. She was a loving, giving and generous person and enjoyed helping others. She was loved by her family and friends.
Bertha leaves to cherish her precious memories: her husband, George Thomas Green of Sumter; three children, Jerome (Karen) of Irvington, N. J., Frederick (Stephanie) of Manning, S. C., and Evette (Oren) of Linden, N. J.; grand children, Tisha, Tonya, Farahd, Wayne, Jared, Ashley, Tiffany and Jasmin; great grandchildren, Shakiah, Dontae, Nevaeh and Dashanay; two brothers, Eugene Spann, Jr. (Dorothy) and Howard Spann (Theresa) of Florida; sister, Anna Ruth Spann of ALA; sisters-in-law, Naomi Berkins of Sumter, Georgia Smith of Newark, N. J., Jannie L. James of Wilmington, N. C., Ruby Harris (Marshall) of Newport News, VA, Julia Tindal (Michael) of San Antonio, TX; brother-in-law, David Green of Sumter; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Abraham and David, and one sister, Marie Peterman.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p. m., Wednesday, August 1, 2012 from the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Abbeville, ALA, with the Rev. Horace Mitchell, officiating, the Rev. Hal Reynolds, Jr., eulogist.
Family will receive friends at her home, 1072 Porter Street, Sumter, and at her family home in Abbeville, ALA.
Floral bearers and Pall bearers will be family and friends.
Burial will be in the Old Judson Cemetery, Abbeville, ALA.
