Minister Sally McFadden Witherspoon, 73, wife of John Witherspoon, entered eternal rest on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at Tuomey Health Care System, Sumter. She was one of 19 siblings born to the late Elijah and Irene Burgess McFadden on August 12, 1939 in Kingstree. She was educated in the public schools system.
In 1964, at the age of 25, she married John Witherspoon. She was the mother of 21 children. She started her ministry under the leadership of her sister, Pastor Ruth Moore. She became an evangelist while ministering at Thessalon Church in New Haven, CT. Minister Witherspoon had enough love for everybody and everyone. She was a loving and faithful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, preacher, teacher and cook.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her husband, John Witherspoon; two sisters, Ruth (William) Moore of Dalzell and Nancy Dickey of New Haven, CT; nine daughters, Luaralee Hylton, Regina Witherspoon, Mary (John) Smith of Dalzell, Cynthia (Ronald) Richardson and Sally (Sammie) Johnson of Rembert, Carrie Jones of Wedgefield, Barbara Witherspoon of Columbia, Annette Scott and Geneva (Ron) Perkins of New Haven, CT; six sons, Samuel (Tiffany) Witherspoon of Dalzell, Steven (Charlette) Witherspoon of Sumter, Henry (Calandra) Witherspoon of Columbia, Billy Scott of New Haven, CT, Matthew “Mackey” Witherspoon of Indiana and Arthur Lee Witherspoon; two step sons, Tony Witherspoon and Arthur “Stringbean” Witherspoon of Columbia; seven sisters-in-law, Carrie (Richard) McFadden, Annifaye, Lillian Moore, Marian Witherspoon and Lois McFadden, all of New Haven, CT; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; a special niece, Pastor Sandra Jefferson whom she loved very dearly; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Carrie McFadden, Geneva Carter, Naomi McFadden, Alimae, Irene, Virginia Nell, Teresa, Willis McFadden, Ervin McFadden, and Daniel Lee McFadden; her children, Joann, Willie Jr., twins John and Johnny, Elizabeth “Temp” Scott; and step daughters, Pearlie and Ann Witherspoon.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, September 1, 2012 from the St. Paul A. M. E. Church, 1495 North St. Paul’s Church Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Eric Dent, Officiating, eulogist,
The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Samuel Witherspoon, 3104 Bush Lane, Dalzell.
The Remains will be placed in the church at 11:00 a. m.
The funeral procession will leave 11:20 a. m. from the home of her son.
Flower bearers and pall bearers will be family and friends.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Sumter.
