Bishop Arthur Greene

Bishop Arthur Greene, 90, beloved husband of Rita Vanterpool Greene, entered eternal rest on Monday, September 3, 2012 at Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Houston, TX.

Born August 28, 1922 in Varnville, he was the son of the late Sam and Annie Jessie Bennett.  Arthur attended the public schools of Hampton.  At an early age, he was called into the ministry, where he pastored several churches in The Church of God of Prophecy.  He later became a Bishop and retired from The Church of God of Prophecy in Sumter.

In addition to his loving wife of 35 years, he leaves behind to nine cherished children, Carl (Shirley) Greene of Sumter, Eston Vanterpool of Houston, TX, Barbara (Kenneth) Adams of New York, Alva (Freeda) Stout of Houston, TX, Laverne (Col. Eric Sr.) Witherspoon of San Antonio, TX, Angel (Amy) Vanterpool of Houston, TX, Dolores Vanterpool of Houston, TX, Cedric (Jackie) Greene of Sumter, and Symra Lanclos of Houston, TX;  a brother, David Nelson of Manhattan, N. Y.; a sister, Martha Walker of Sumter; fifteen grandchildren;  thirteen great-grandchildren; a very special niece, Minnie Lee Harris of Wilmington, DE; a number of nieces and nephews; three special foster children, Tahara, Ernest and Santana Gibson;  and other relatives and  friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Riley Greene, and sisters, Arlene (Dodda) Wright, Marie Smith, Annie Mae Avery, Mary Johnson, Emily Ferguson, Annie Bell Mole and Rosa Patterson.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a. m., Friday, September 14, 2012 from the Church of God of Prophecy, 4610 Sunflower Street, Houston, TX  77051.  

The family will receive family and  friends at the home of his son, Carl and Shirley Greene, 142 Perkins Avenue, Sumter on Friday, September 7, 2012  from 6:00 – 9:00 p. m.

The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, a monetary donation be made to the Nehemiah Project, in care of The Church of God of Prophecy, 4610 Sunflower Street, Houston, TX, 77051

Funeral services will be directed by McCoy and Harrison Funeral Home of Houston, TX
