Thomas R Woods

Thomas Reuben Woods, age 90 of Sumter, S. C., passed into eternal life at Tuomey Hospital, Sumter, S. C. on Saturday, September 22, 2012.  He was the son of the late Harrison Kenzie Woods and Josephine McCray Woods.  He was born in Gable, S. C. on September 1, 1922.

In his youth he joined Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church, Turbeville, S. C..  Mr. Woods was employed with Williams Furniture Company, Exide Battery Company and retired from the Florida East Coast Railroad as a machine operator.

Mr. Woods was a devoted member of the Atlantic Avenue Checker Club and the Friendship and Millcreek Hunting Club. He was an avid fisherman.  He was an excellent cook, whom enjoyed preparing the various game for his family and friends.  His favorite past time was watching the Braves Baseball Team with his friend Aaron Rhodes.

He leaves to cherish his memories upon his marriage to Azalee Woods Knox;  four daughters, Carolyn Woods of Fort Worth, TX, Elizabeth (Dr. Connor) Mulcahey of Elizabethtown, KY, Thomasenia (Joseph) Gaines and Sherian W. Rogers of Sumter, S. C.  Prior to his marriage he has a daughter Julia Ceasar Burrell of Sumter, S. C.;  one brother, James R. Woods of Washington, DC; four grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren;  a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lora Jane Woods and Pinkie Adams, and one brother, Charlton Woods.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p. m., Saturday, September 29, 2012 from the Melina Presbyterian Church (USA), Gable, with Elder Ronnie L. McFadden, pastor of Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church, eulogist, assisted by Rev. Samuel Sparks, pastor of Melina Presbyterian Church,  the Rev. Mary Hagan, the Rev. Dr. Ella Busby, the Rev. Carnell Hampton, the Rev. C. N. Howard,  and Elder Willie Witherspoon.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law,  Joseph and Thomasenia Gaines,  717 North Main Street, Sumter.

A wake service will be held 6 – 7 p. m., Friday, in the John Wesley Williams, Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter.

The Remains will be placed in the church at 12:00 Noon.

The funeral procession will leave the home of his daughter at 12:15 p. m.

Burial will be in the Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church, Turbeville, S. C.
