Elijah "Sonny" Holmes, Jr., 59, husband of Lelia Hickmon Holmes, departed this earthly life on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Lexington Medical Center, West Columbia. Born in Lee County on April 20, 1950, he was the son of the late Elijah and Lillie Mae Felder Holmes, Sr.
He was educated in the public school of Lee County, a 1968 graduate of Dennis High School. He was one of the first black man to integrate the Lee County Public Library in 1967. He also attended Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. funeral in 1968.
"Sonny", as he was affectionately called, served a tour of duty in the United States Marines Corps during which he received the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Rifle Expert Badge. He was well known and loved by many.
Surviving to cherish his memories: his wife, Lelia (Le-Le) Hickmon Holmes; one son, Ubri Yakubi Holmes of Atlanta, GA; one step daughter, LaDoshia Holmes-Clark of Columbia; three step sons, Jamie, Israel (Tifphanie), and Wilton Hickmon, all of Bishopville; four sisters, Dorothy Stuckey of Philadelphia, PA, Earlene (Charlie) Carter of Somerdale, NJ, Linda Davis of Bishopville, Carolyn (Marvin) Robinson of the home; one brother, Deacon Rulon (Elaine) Wiley of McBee; two grandchildren, Breemond and Deja Holmes of Atlanta, GA; eleven step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; three aunts, Mary Williams of Columbia, Martha Joe of Greenville, Dorine Brown of Lake City; one uncle, David (Janie) Holmes of Roselle, NJ; a father-in-law, McKinley Moses; a sister-in-law, Lanetta Hickmon of Fayetteville, NC; two brothers-in-law, Willie (Jermilla) Moses of Hartsville, Sylvester (Deloris) Moses of Bishopville; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a. m., Monday, July 20, 2009 from the Joshua Church of Deliverance, 508 West Church Street (Highway 34), Bishopville with the Pastor Annette Rubin, pastor, Pastor Johnnie L. Blythers, eulogist, assisted Minister Eddie M. Shuler, Pastor Russell Spencer and Minister Rickey Stuckey.
The family will receive friends at the family home 561 Calvary Church Road, Bishopville.
The Remains will be placed in the church at 10:00 a. m
The Funeral procession will leave the family home at 10:30 a. m.
Floral bearers and Pall bearers will be Dennis High School Classmates, Class of 1968.
Burial will be in the Florence National Cemetery, Florence.
