Betty Ruth Peterson, 76, widow of Willie Pinkney, Sr., departed this life on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at her home. Born December 24, 1936, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of late Hayes Peterson and Gardenia Robinson Peterson. She attended the public schools of Sumter County. She was employed by Campbell Soup Company prior to retirement.
At an early age, she joined Quinn Chapel AME. Church, where she was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society, stewardess board and president of the young adult choir. She was a faithful member of the Eastern Star and served as a dedicated member of Melody Aires of Sumter.
Those who will always cherish her memories: two sons, Willie Pinkney, Jr. of Washington, DC and Kevin Pinkney of Sumter; three grandchildren, Charles Allen Pinkney of Washington, DC, La Shelya (Terry) Sewell of Cuanico, VA, and Cateskia Pinkney of Columbia; four great grandchildren, Malek Crosby, Kenote and Au’Monee Stanley, all of Cuanico, VA and Shy’Heem Bobby Pinkney of Columbia; two special aunts, Carrie Bell and Bertha Robinson, both of Sumter; and a host of special cousins, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Pinkney and two uncles, Charlie and Wilford Robinson.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p. m., Saturday, June 15, 2013 from the Quinn Chapel AME Church, 2400 Queen Chapel Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Earthar McLeod Joe, pastor, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Eddie Pendergrass, and Rev. Alvin Webb.
The family will receive friends and relatives at her home, 203 East Moore Street, Sumter.
The Remains will be placed in the church at 2:00 p. m.
The funeral procession will leave from her home at 2:30 p. m.
Flower bearers and pall bearers will be special cousins and friends.
