Carl DuBose Sr
Oct 15, 1958 to Sep 07, 2013

Carl Lorenza DuBose, Sr., 54, departed this life on Earth to enter eternal rest on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia, after a brief illness.  Born October 15, 1958, in Sumter,  he was the son of James H. DuBose and  the late Ida Mae Richardson DuBose.  Carl was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Sumter High School, Class of 1976.  He attended the University of South Carolina, Sumter, briefly after graduation.  He served our country proudly as a member of the United States Navy Reserve until he was honorably discharged in 1993.  He worked for several years at Yuasa Exide working his way up from production associate to shift supervisor.  After his employment at Exide, he worked for 15 years at Wal-Mart while also honing his entrepreneurial skills as a hair care products salesman.

He was raised in a Christian home where the family worshipped at the Bethlehem Second United Presbyterian Church and later the New Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he was currently a member.

Carl was constantly challenging himself to make improvements in his life.  He continued his education and completed his welding certification in 2006.  He just recently celebrated one year tobacco free, an accomplishment that he was exceptionally proud of, because he did it on his own.

Carl was the jokester among his siblings.  “Baby Boy”, as he was affectionately called by his brothers, was the ultimate fishing partner, confidant, and debate opponent.  He formed relationships and acted as a father figure to many children and young adults over the years.

He leaves to cherish his fond memories:  his father, James H. DuBose of Sumter;  his wife of 9 years, Bashirah McKay DuBose;  five children, Shaunda (Gregory) Lamar of Pearland, TX, Carl DuBose, Jr. of Atlanta, GA,  Muneera and Faadil McKay of  Sumter,  and Kaamila McKay of Johannesburg, South Africa;  five grandchildren, Symphoni, Carlton and Sydney Lamar of Pearland, TX and Shaamila and Sheharazaad McKay of Johannesburg, South Africa;  three brothers, James E. (Sally) DuBose and Harry DuBose, both of Sumter, and Ted (Stephanie) DuBose of Charlotte, NC;  one sister, Sharon DuBose of Columbia;  two nieces, Stacy DuBose of Chicago, IL and Courtney DuBose of Charlotte, NC;  one nephew, Quinton DuBose of Winchester, VA; a special extended family, the Howard family; and a host of other family, friends, and co-workers, all of whom will miss him dearly.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 a. m., Thursday, September 12, 2013,  from the New Covenant Presbyterian Church (USA), 907 Legare Street,  Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Gloria J. Williams, Moderator,  the Rev. Retha Nelson, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Gerald Tomlin and Elder Cornell Shaw.

The family will receive friends and relatives at the home of his father, James H. Dubose,  321 Pinson Street, Sumter.

The Remains will be placed in the church at 10:30 a. m.

The funeral procession will leave from the home of his father at 11:00 a. m.

Floral bearers will be Sumter High School, Class of 1976 Classmates and Presbyterian Women.

Pall bearers will be Sumter High School, Class of 1976 Classmates and Presbyterian Men.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Sumter.
