Harry L. English, Sr.

Harry L. “H. L. / Bubba” English, Sr., 85, answered his call from the Lord on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at the Medical University of SC Hospital, Charleston. Born September 26, 1929, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Nelson English, Sr. and Della Curtis Jenkins. Harry attended the public schools of Sumter County. He enlisted in the United States Army in February 1951 and served with the 148th Infantry Regiment at Camp Polk, LA. After completing 2 years of service, he was honorably discharged in February 1953 and returned to Sumter. During his military services, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Mammie Anderson on October 10, 1952. Harry accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age. He was a lifelong member of St. Luke AME Church, where he served as trustee emeritus, class leader, sons of Allen, lay organization, and wherever his service was needed. Harry leaves to cherish his memories: his wife of 62 years, Mammie; step mother, Maggie English Pitts of Columbia; eight children, Eura Seabrook, Linda M. English, Idella Tindal and Harry L. English, Jr., all of Sumter, Ret. Command Sergeant Major Norman (Pia) English of Radcliff, KY, Bernard English, Sr. of Sumter, Stacey (Bill) McCray of Alcolu, and Ret. Senior Master Sergeant Randy English of Woodbridge, VA; two sister, Dorothy English of Columbia, Maggie Hancock of Hattiesburg, MS; a spiritual adoptive son, Rev. Roger L. Washington; thirteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; former daughter-in-law, Elizabeth English; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; Homegoing Celebration services will be held 11:00 a. m., Thursday, August 27, 2015 from the St. Luke A. M. E. Church, 2355 North St. Paul Church Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Orlando McCauley, Jr., pastor, eulogist,assisted by the Rev. R. L. Washington, Rev. Dr. Eliza E. Black, Rev. Pamela Mack, and Rev. Clarence Hunter. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 872 Twin Lakes Drive, Sumter. The Remains will be placed in the church at 10:00 a.m. The funeral procession will leave from the home at 10:20 a. m. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park, 802 North Guignard Drive, Sumter.
