John Edward Johnson, 61, departed this earthly life on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at The Regional Memorial Center, Orangeburg. Born in Sumter County, March 27, 1954, he was the son of Verlie Mae Jenkins Johnson and the late Hezekiah “Doube” Johnson. As a youth he was a member of Mt. Olive AME Church, Woodrow. He attended Sumter County Public School and was a graduate of Hillcrest High School, Class of 1974. As a young man, he decided to move to Washington, DC, where he was employed at BF Goodrich Tire. He later moved back to his home, Sumter. Those who will celebrate his life and cherish heart felt memories: his mother, Verlie Mae Johnson; a daughter, Necole Poles of Washington, DC; three sons, John Jr. (Shavonne) of Waldorf, MD, Kelvin (Tameika) of Charleston and Chris of Washington, DC; five grandchildren; three sisters, Rosa of the home, Mamie (Lutrell) of Plymouth, NC and Odell (Sammy) of Sumter; one brother, Albert Jenkins of Waldorf, MD; two aunts, Mamie and Rosalee Johnson, both of Washington, DC; one sister-in-law, Mattie Johnson of Rembert; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Celebration of Life services will be held 2:00 p. m., Saturday, December 5, 2015 from the Mt. Olive AME Church, 2738 Woodrow Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Friendly J. Gadson, pastor, eulogist. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of his mother, 5225 Cotton Acres Road, Sumter. The Remains will be placed in the church for viewing at 1:00 p. m. The funeral procession will leave from the home of his mother at 1:30 p. m. Floral bearers and Pall bearers will be friends of the family. Burial will be in the Mt. Olive Memorial Garden, Pear Street, Woodrow.
