James Leroy Jefferson, Jr., 63, was the son of the late James Leroy Jefferson, Sr. and Janie Mae Prescott Jefferson Bright. He was born on April 1, 1957 in Sumter County and called to his eternal home on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital, Columbia. “Mike”, as he was affectionately known in the community, was a caring person with a loving smile. He attended the public schools of Sumter County and at an early age he joined Mt. Olive AME Church, Woodrow. He leaves to cherish his memories: one daughter, Gertrude “Stephanie” Dowdy; two sisters, Hanna (Raynard) Jefferson-Jackson of Sumter and Mary Prescott of Atlanta, GA; four brothers, William Jefferson, Andrew Jefferson, Charles Jefferson, all of Sumter and John (Junko) Jefferson of Harbor, WA; one uncle, Alex Prescott of Woodrow; three aunts, Anna Marrow of Bishopville, Louise (Bobby) Brickell of Newark, NJ and Easter (Edward) Cantey of Wedgefield; three grand uncles, William Jenkins, James (Jenette) Jenkins and Otha Johnson, all of Sumter; three grand aunts, Marie Jefferson of Dalzell, Bertha McCoy and Rose Lee Wactor, both of Sumter; five great-grand aunts; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Due to the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting no visitation. Graveside services will be held 11 a. m., Monday, July 20, 2020 at Cooksfield Cemetery, J D Herriott Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Dr. R. L. Brown, pastor of Mt. Olive AME Church, officiating.
