Thelma Whittaker Anderson, 83, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2020 in Portsmouth, VA. Thelma was a native of Sumter and a graduate of Lincoln High School. After completing High School, she attended South Carolina State College. Later, she transferred to Norfolk State University, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She received a second degree in Special Education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. After 35 years of dedicated service in teaching, she retired from Portsmouth City Public Schools. Thelma leaves to cherish her memory: her husband of 62 years, Milford Larry “Andy” Anderson; a daughter and son, Renee Anderson of Portsmouth, VA and Anthony Anderson of Chester, VA; sister, Frances Jones of Sumter; sister-in-law, Leola Whittaker of Sumter; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Homegoing service will be held at 11:00 a. m., Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth VA.
