Mr. George Herbert Melton departed this earthly life on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter, South Carolina. Mr. George, son of the late Frank Melton, Sr. and Carola Jenkins Melton, was born on February 26, 1940. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, he joined New Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he was a lifelong member. He enjoyed attending and participating with whatever activities and duties. For years he maintained the upkeep of the cemetery until his health no longer would allow him to continue. Mr. George was married to the love of his life, Irene (Pluck) Melton. He was employed for many years at Owens Electric Steel in Cayce, South Carolina. He was also employed at Sumter Machinery an Korn Industries until his retirement. He worked many years after retiring doing what he loved most, tombstone monuments and markers on graves. For years he enjoyed the joy it brought to the faces of families he dealt with. As his sight and health began to decline, he had to retire also from that. He leaves to cherish his precious memories: four daughters, Emma (James) Brailsford of Dalzell, S. C., Josephine McMillian of Columbia, S. C., Patricia Bracey and Diane (Willie) Gathers, both of Sumter, S. C.; one sister, Martha Vaughn; six sisters-in-law, Ida Melton, Veronica McMillian, Ida Mae Oliver, Annie Louise McMillian, Ophelia “Gladys” McMillian and Willie Bell Melton; one brother-in-law, Johnny McMillian; two god daughters, Patricia Webb and Dorothy Floyd, both of Sumter, S. C.; eight grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 11:00 am at the St. Paul Holiness Church, Sumter, SC. Interment will follow at the St. Paul Holiness Church Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave the home,50 Melton Lane, Sumter, SC at 10:15 p.m.
