Mrs. Irene (Pluck) Melton departed this earthly life on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter, South Carolina. Mrs. Irene, the daughter of the late Clarence McMillian and Beulah Richardson McMillian, was born on March 15, 1937. She attended the public schools of Lee County. At an early age she joined Mechanicsville United Methodist Church in the Ashwood community until God led her to St. Paul Holiness Church in the early 1970’s, where she was under the leadership of the late Elder Mark and Nell Pierson. She served faithfully in many organizations: President of the Missionary Department, Vice President of the Senior Choir, Pastor’s Aide, member of the Senior Organization and the Usher Board. She was also the church custodian for ten years. Mrs. Irene was married to the love of her life, the late George Herbert Melton, who preceded her in death. She was employed in various jobs throughout her life, child care provider, food service and textile worker until her health began to fail. She leaves to cherish her precious memories: four daughters, Emma (James) Brailsford of Dalzell, S. C., Josephine McMillian of Columbia, S. C., Patricia Bracey and Diana (Willie) Gathers, both of Sumter, S. C.; one brother, Johnny McMillian of Sumter, S. C.; one sister, Ida M. Oliver of Brooklyn, N. Y.; six sisters-in-law, Ida Melton, Martha Vaughn, Veronica McMillian, Ophelia “Gladys” McMillian, Annie Louise McMillian and Willie Bell Melton; three special nieces, Bernice (James) Ray, Beulah Carter and Mary Porter; two god daughters, Patricia Webb and Dorothy Floyd, both of Sumter, S. C; one god son, Preston Burns of Columbia, S. C.; eight grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 11:00 am at the St. Paul Holiness Church, Sumter, SC. Interment will follow at the St. Paul Holiness Church Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave the home, 50 Melton Lane, Sumter, SC at 10:15.
