Mrs. Eva Mae Windham Johnson, daughter of the late Deacon Charlie Windham, Sr., and Carrie Durant Windham, was born on June 20, 1933, in Sumter. She attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Ebenezer High School, Class of 1969, Sumter. On October 8, 1950, she was united in Holy Matrimony to James Edward Johnson, Sr. To this union, nine children were born. At the age of thirteen, Eva accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined the Joshua Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful and devoted member until her death. Mrs. Johnson served Joshua and the Sumter Baptist Missionary and Education Association unselfishly in several capacities. Eva served as the past Secretary of the Executive board, past Chairperson of the board for the Women’s Ministry, and Advisor to the Usher’s Choir. She served for 22 years as the President of the Joshua Baptist Church Senior Missionary Society, over 20 years as the assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Secretary of the Homecoming Committee, President and member of the Gospel Choir, President and member of the Missionary Singers, Advisor over the Junior and Young Adult choirs, Advisor over the Junior Ushers, and member of the Souvenir Journal Committee. She also served as Treasurer of the Senior Missionary, member of the Usher board and Bylaws Committee until her death. She was employed at Big A department store and then retired from Shawview cleaners after working for over 30 years as a master seamstress. Her passion was working in her yard, her flower garden and singing. Mrs. Johnson was called to her eternal resting place on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter. Those surviving to cherish her warm memories are: her loving husband, James; seven children, Robert (Willie Mae) Johnson, Evelyn Bennett, James E. Johnson, Jr., all of Sumter, Eva Johnson of Columbia, Alexander Johnson and William T. (Karen) Johnson of Sumter, and Alvina Johnson of Charlotte, NC; James Windham (reared as a brother); seventeen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; five sister-in-laws, Olease McLean, Delores Pittman, Ruby Proctor, Sarah Johnson all of Brooklyn, N Y, Susan Martin of Sumter, and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two children, Christopher Mitchell and Nora Jane; three sisters, Corine Johnson, Inell Stover, and Carrie Rogers, and a brother, Charlie Windham, Jr. In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home from 12:00 – 6:00 p. m., 4735 Cotton Acres Road, Sumter. Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon, Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at Joshua Baptist Church, 5200 Live Oak Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Eugene Dennis, pastor, Eulogist. The remains will be placed in the church at 11:00 a. m. for viewing until time of services. The procession will leave the home at 11:30 a. m. Burial will follow in the Joshua Baptist Church Yard Cemetery Dalzell.
