SMSgt USAF (Ret) Claude Garrett, 78, departed this earthly life on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter. Born in McCormick on April 11, 1941, he was the son of the late Fred Garrett and Janie Lee Mims. At an early age Claude was baptized at the Bethany Missionary Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Mims High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and gave 27 years of dedicated service until retirement with honors and decorations in 1987. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam. Mr. Garrett graduated from the University of South Carolina – Sumter with a Bachelor Degree in Accounting. He was the proud owner and operator of Garrett’s Accounting and Tax Service. He was united in marriage for 56 years to the love of his life, formerly Coateen Linton. To this union no children was born, but many nieces, nephews and godchildren who are so dearly loved. He leaves to cherish precious memories: his wife, Coateen Garrett; a sister, Martha (Raymond) Lanon of Monroe, N. C.; his brothers-in-law, Ernest Lee Linton of Providence, R. I., Charles Linton of Greenwood; his sisters-in-law, Cassandra Linton of Greenwood, Teri Linton of Providence, R. I.; six nieces; three nephews; a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive relatives and friends at the home, 20 Soye Circle, Dalzell. Funeral Services will be held 1 p. m., Monday, March 9, 2020 from the Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 803 South Harvin Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Marion H. Newton, senior pastor, eulogist. The Remains will be placed in the church at noon. The funeral procession will leave the home at 12:20 p. m. Burial will be 11:00 a. m., Wednesday, March 11, 2020 in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia.
