Adam Clayton Gavin was born on June 24, 1975 in Sumter, the youngest child of Patricia Mahoney Gavin and Johnny Gavin, Sr. Clayton passed in peace at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter, on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at the age of 45. Clayton was a proud graduate of Hillcrest High School, Class of 1994. During his High School years football was his passion and he enjoyed and excelled as a full back throughout his High School Career. At the end of his senior year injuries began to plague Clayton and his football days ended. Nothing stopped him from moving to the next chapter he enrolled into Livingston College the fall of 1995 and was a proud HBCU Summa Cum Laude Graduate of Livingston College, class of 1999. After graduation, he returned home to Sumter and began his more than 23 year career with Department of Juvenile Justice. Clayton had a passion for helping the children and not only did he serve on his job but could often be seen in the community talking an mentoring others whenever he could. He had a heart for helping children get on track and succeeding. In his free time Clayton enjoyed his family, football and mentoring. Clayton is survived by: his wife, Kenjeta Gavin; his daughter, Diari’ Gavin; his mother, Patricia Mahoney Gavin of Dalzell; his father, Johnny Gavin Sr. of Columbia; brother, Johnny Bruce Gavin of Fort Mill; sister, Tracie (Dee) Greene of Atlanta, GA; nephews, Jay Gavin and Thomas Greene; niece, Ahlihag Gavin; aunts, Bertha Bembry, Mary Mary Mahoney, Ida (Larry) Nathaniel, Mary Ann (Johhny) Wigfall; uncle, William Gavin; two step-brothers, Andre (Gavana) Davis, Justin Gavin; one step-sister, Kayla Gavin; a goddaughter, Jazmen Shaw; and a host of beloved family members and friends. In accordance with the COV19 guidelines, the family is requesting face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitations at the home, 3245 Kim Street, Dalzell. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 23, 2021 – 11:00 a. m. in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home, 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with Pastor Clifton Witherspoon, officiating. The procession will leave from the home at 10:20 a. m. Burial will be in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Highway 441, Dalzell.
