Howard Willie “Butch” Sumter, 67, transitioned on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at Prisma Health Richland Heart Hospital in Columbia, with his family there. Born in Kershaw County, he was the son of the late Hammie Williams, Jr. and Pearlee Boykin Sumpter. He was reared by the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Moses of Rembert. He also resided with Mr. Clyde Kirven for a number of years with his friends and relatives in love there. He attended schools of Sumter County and was a recent retiree of Kershaw County Government Services, where he had many friends and associates that he treasured. He was baptized at and a member of Union Baptist Church, Rembert, where he truly cherished worshipping the Lord with friends and family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by mother in love Susie Williams, brother Curtis Sumpter, sister Anita Hunter, sister Julia Ross, brother in love Terry Herrington, and brother in love Leroy Williams. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 41 years, Mable Jenkins Sumter; his two children, Eric Sumter of Virginia Beach, VA and Natasha Sumter of Raleigh, NC; two granddaughters, Khyrin Sumter of Charlotte, NC and Lyric Sumter of Virginia Beach, VA; sister, Suedell (Levi) Dixon; brothers, Henry Lee Sumpter, Herbert (Lillie Mae) Boykin, Connell (Renda) Sumpter, Andrew Sumpter, James (Sylvia) Williams, Willie (Bertha) Williams, Sam (Deborah) Williams and Joseph (Patricia) Williams; brothers in love, Henry Williams and Charles William; sisters in love, Stacy (Norman) Baker and Daisy Pollard; a special niece, Juliet Flowers; a special grandniece, Anita Sumpter; a special cousin, Chic Wells; a special cousin-in-law, Travis Jenkins; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, in-laws, and special friends whom he dearly loved and adored them all. In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during all visitation at the home, 4410 Herrington Road, Rembert. Public viewing will be held Friday, April 30, 2021 from 12:00 noon until 6:00 p. m. in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel at Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a. m., Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Union Baptist Church Cemetery, 5840 Springhill Road, Rembert, with the Rev. Walter Robertson, III, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Union Baptist Churchyard Cemetery.
