Shirlene English, daughter of the late Warren B. English and Dorothy Hightower, born July 3, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was reared by her grandparents, the late Trustee John and Sarah Dawson English. She transitioned peacefully at her home on Sunday, January 2, 2022. She graduated from Edmondson High School in Baltimore, Maryland. Shirlene was employed at the Baltimore Board of Elections for over 40 years and retired in 2011. Soon after retirement, she returned to Sumter, where she reconnected herself with High Hills Missionary Baptist Church, Dalzell, serving on the Missionary Ministry. Shirlene volunteered her energy and time at Sumter senior Services, a nonprofit organization in Sumter. Shirlene was a very independent person, hard-worker, orderly and timely. She loved her family, enjoyed traveling, shopping and helping others. Shirlene leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory: a daughter, Laura English of the home; two grandchildren, Quentin (Jessica) English of Charlotte, N. C., Destiny English of the home; two great grandchildren, Q J English and Aubree English of Charlotte, N. C.; eight siblings, Carol (Robert) English Young of Sumter, Sarah English Williams, Christine (Rhaubi) English, Weambe, John Henry Johnson, Mary Johnson (Stanberry) Bea, Jacqueline Johnson, William (Shamia) Johnson all of Baltimore, MD and Butch English of Hertford, N. C.; uncles, Isaac English of Florence, Stephen (Julia) English of Columbia, Haskin English of Sumter; aunts, Emma English of Wedgefield, Evelyn English of Dalzell, Louise (Dee Dee) Berry of Baltimore, MD; special friends, Carolyn McArthur, Alvin McArthur, Jeff Davis and Allen Jackson, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and her devoted companion, Tutu.. In accordance with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during all visitation at the home, 5450 Commonwealth Court, Dalzell. Memorial services will be held 11:30 a. m., Sunday, January 9, 2022 in the High Hills Missionary Baptist Church Yard Cemetery, 6750 Meeting House Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Donald Amis, pastor, officiating. The processional will leave from the home at 11:00 a. m.
