Ret. Sgt. Wayne Woods Sr. departed this life for the next on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at his home, 4598 Lodebar Rd, Sumter. He was born August 4, 1957 to Mary Woods Johnson and the late Leroy Woods, Sr. He joined the Antioch United Methodist Church at a young age. He graduated from Maywood High School in 1976. Upon graduating from High School, he joined the United States Army and served his Country for 20 years before retired to his hometown of Sumter. He worked at the Department of Corrections, Lee County, after retirement. His hobbies were playing basketball, pool and bowling. He is survived by his son, Wayne Woods, Jr. of Sumter, and Larry Woods of New Jersey; grandchildren, Anthony, Nicayah, Zabien, Zabionn, Payton, Paige, and Judah; a loving mother, Mary Woods Johnson of Blythewood; two brothers, James (Cynthia) Woods, Olin Woods both of Sumter; three sisters, Francenia (Herman) Vaughn of Sumter, Evelyn (Newton) Loo of Lagrangeville, N. Y. and Carrie (Reginald) Taylor of Blythewood; sister-in-law, Helen Woods; a special friend, Diane Johnson and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne Woods and daughter, Temieka Marie Woods; his father, Leroy Woods, Sr.; his brother, Leroy Woods Jr.; his grandparents, John and Ethel Woods, Maggie Jackson and Pansy and Shepard Jackson. In accordance with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitations at 312 Overlook Drive, Blythewood. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a. m., Thursday, September 22, 2022 in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Marvis Stewart, Pastor of Antioch United Methodist Church, officiating and the Rev. Devon Wright, pastor of Pine Grove Baptist Church, Cades, Eulogist. Burial will be12:00 noon in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, with full military honor.
