Martha Ann Porcher-Almamy, (fondly known as “Sister”), was born on November 21, 1953 in Sumter to the late Marion Moise Porcher and Martha Ann Abrams. She departed this life on March 16, 2023 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital, Columbia. Martha attended Bates Middle School and Lincoln High School in Sumter. She moved to New York City in the 70’s, where she worked various jobs and became a mother of four. She was known for her good ole’ southern cooking and hospitality and had a sense of humor that could tickle anyone’s funny bone. She was protective of her family and could even be tough when needed. While living in South Carolina she attended Grant Hill Baptist Church where she accepted Jesus as her Savior. In 2000, Martha moved to Virginia to help raise her grandchildren. While in Virginia she continued her spiritual walk at New Life Christian Ministries of Our Lord Jesus Christ. She was employed at Tyson’s Food and also worked at Manor Care Nursing Home. Martha resided in Virginia for nearly a decade before she become homesick. Missing her southern roots, she returned to Sumter until her transition. She leaves to cherish her precious memory: an uncle, Aaron (Mabel) Abrams; three siblings, Jimmy Porcher, Eva Mae Porcher and Eula Lee Porcher; three children, Demetra Ann (Kevin) Porcher, Linda Renee Jamison and Joseph Nathaniel Byam; eight grandchildren; two great-grandsons; two nephews, and a host of devoted cousins and friends. In accord with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 4295 Cotton Acres Road, Sumter. Viewing of the Remains will be Saturday, March 25, 2023 - 10:00 a. m. until time of the funeral services at 11:00 a. m., in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter with the Rev. Dr. J. Elbert Williams, Eulogist. The procession will leave the home at 10:30 a. m. Burial will be in the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Yard Cemetery, 4620 Queen Chapel Road, Dalzell.
