Ozzie Lawrence Newkirk journey began on July 24, 1945 in East Orange, New Jersey. He was the son of the late Ossie and Natalie Shields Newkirk. He was a member of Grace Cathedral Ministries of Sumter where he served as a part of the media ministry prior to COVID. Mr. Newkirk retired as a maintenance supervisor with East Orange Housing Authority. He died on Sunday, March 19, 2023 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. Survivors include his wife, Roberta Newkirk of Middlesex, N. J.; three children, David (Shana) Newkirk of Sumter, S. C., Donna (Clyde) Newkirk Washington of Savannah, GA and Kelly (Jasper) Newkirk Thomas of Hoover, ALA; nine grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by four brothers, Melvin Newkirk, William Newkirk, Ossie Newkirk and Sherman Newkirk and three sisters, Carolyn Newkirk, Leola Newkirk and Marilyn James. In accordance with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 105 Virginia Drive, Sumter. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m., Saturday, March 25, 2023 in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with Prophetess Santanna Gadson, Officiating, Bishop Anthony Gibson, Eulogist. The procession will leave the home at 1:30 p. m.
