James Ernest Givens passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at North Central Bronx Hospital, Bronx, New York. Born June 27, 1938 in Sumter, South Carolina, he was the second oldest child of the late Willie Sam Givens Sr. and Gladys Bell Givens. James attended Lincoln High School in Sumter County and went on to marry Katie Fullwood. Together, they moved to Harlem and had five children. Later on, James married Pauline (Judy) Humbert, and they had one child. He worked for the Department of Transportation as a steel machinist for 20 years and then at Lenox Terrace in Harlem, New York as the supervisor of the Maintenance Department for 20 years, retiring from there. With a passion for music, singing, dancing, playing checkers, and current events, James was known for his strong work ethic and fun-loving nature. He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Katie Maria Givens; his son, George Stanley Givens, and eight siblings, Willie Jr., Robert, Thomas, Pearl, George, David, Laura Tucker, and Mary Gregg. James is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Pauline (Judy) Givens; five daughters, Gladys (Tony) Hall of Georgia, Dorothy Givens, Katrina Humbert, Brittany Givens, and Penny (George) Givens; one son, Willie James Givens of Bronx, New York; two brothers, retired Sgt. 1st Class Reginald (Brenda) Thomas of Lawton, Oklahoma and Jeffery (Keisha) Thomas of Columbia, South Carolina; three granddaughters; seven grandsons; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and close friends. In accordance with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting no visitation. at the home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a. m., Saturday, June 24, 2023 at the Clarks United Methodist Church, 2980 Oswego Highway, Sumter. The procession will leave the home at 10:30 a. m. Burial will follow in the Clarks United Methodist Church Yard Cemetery.
